Barbie toymaker Mattel’s latest effort to make dolls more inclusive introduces us to a new kind of Barbie with Down syndrome.

Mattel said it worked with the National Down Syndrome Society in the United States to make the doll, which differs from other Barbies in many ways. He has a shorter frame, a rounder shape, smaller ears, and a longer torso.

“She wears a pink collar with three upturned chevrons representing the three copies of chromosome 21, as well as pink ankle and foot braces.” Mattel said while describing the doll.

“Our goal is to allow all children to see themselves as Barbie, while encouraging children to play with dolls that do not look like them,” the executive vice president and global head of Barbie & Dolls said in a statement. .
