We have great news about the upcoming 1.20 update of Minecraft of this year. The following content, announced via Minecraft.net over the past few days, will soon be available in a snapshot for Minecraft Java and in preview for Minecraft Bedrock at a later date. If you’re unfamiliar with snapshots and previews, they allow players to Minecraft test new features before they are released in-game. These new features are still in development, so we encourage the Minecraft community to share your feedback and report any bugs you find before release.

Below is information on the three announcements. These new features were announced via their respective Minecraft blog posts (link below) and will be available from February 15th.

The long-awaited archeology set, originally featured at Minecraft Live 2020 and later postponed, officially arrives at Minecraft in the 1.20 update. Archeology encompasses several features that together will add a greater sense of mystery to players’ survival worlds. Players will find a new type of arena –suspicious sand– Near the desert temples, and using a new tool, the brush, they can remove suspicious sand blocks to discover hidden tools, bones, sniffer eggs and pottery shards. These contain partial patterns, and four fragments can be put together to create a patterned vessel that tells a unique story. More information here.

The winner of the Minecraft Live Mob 2022 vote is coming to the Overworld! The ancient creature has returned from extinction. Sniffer eggs can be found in new archeological sites near desert temples. Players can hatch the newly unearthed egg and get a baby sniffer, which will grow into a giant sniffer. The new mob can follow the ancient seeds from when they once roamed the Overworld. The new seeds will become unique decorative plants. More information here.
