A top-down roguelite featuring a very angry amphibian, AK-xolotl just had its official world premiere at the Future Games Show Spring Showcase powered by Turtle Beach Stealth Pro and best of all, you can play the demo right now .

The name alone is a serious selling point, but when I first saw AK-xolotl I was quickly drawn to its top-down plan, which is immediately reminiscent of the likes of Nuclear Throne and Enter. the Gungeon. Seconds after that, I was completely sold: The scowl the fallen (and now very, very angry) amphibian gives on camera speaks to a game that fully understands its task.

As the name suggests, your weapon of choice is an AK-47, and you’ll play as the cutest of all the Salamander’s aquatic relatives, an axolotl. As you work your way to the top of your ecosystem, you’ll also be able to raise baby axolotls, which will eventually become playable characters in their own right, each with their own unique abilities. The tame side of AK-xolotl doesn’t stop there either, as you’ll round out your weapon lineup with some serious cooking skills, cooking meals using items collected from each run to help boost your strength. .

As an ironic, pixel-art, bullet-hell roguelite, it’s clear that AK-xolotl draws a lot of inspiration from some of the most beloved indies of the past decade. It will be released this year on PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, where you can add it to your wishlist and watch a free demo now.
