Octopath Traveler 2 debuted to disappointing sales in Japan.
Square Enix’s RPG sequel was released last week on February 24, but game sales data has already been reported in Japan, thanks to the Game Data Library tweet below. Octopath Traveler 2 reportedly only sold 78,000 copies on PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch in its first week on the market.

This figure means that Octopath Traveler 2 is the second weakest Team Asano game launch in Japan. It is second in this category only to the 2022 remake of Live A Live, which sold around 71,000 copies when it was released in Japan. However, Live-A-Live was only released on Nintendo Switch, where Octopath Traveler 2 is now available on PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.
Additionally, Octopath Traveler 2 is Team Asano’s only cross-platform game. No doubt this is really disappointing for Square Enix. What makes it even more confusing is that Octopath Traveler 2 is actually a very good sequel to Team Asano, a more polished RPG that improves on the original in almost every way. That it wasn’t able to trade a significant number of copies, enough to beat the original Octopath Traveler, is a great shame.
