A female streamer hides under a mask in this intriguing Korean thriller coming to Netflix.

The series set in the world of live streaming has confirmed its premiere date

You can be anyone you want on the Internet. With that premise in mind, office worker Kim Mo Mi, who lives insecure about her appearance, takes a mask and becomes a streamer who delights her audience by dancing in front of the camera. In the series The Masked Girl (Mask Girl), the protagonist will be involved in a dark incident. “Three names, three lives, three murders,” mysteriously suggests the trailer that Netflix revealed this July 20.

The seven-episode title features a stellar cast that includes Go Hyun Jung, known for her role in Reflection of You, and Nana, former member of the k-pop group After School, who will play Kim Mo Mi at different stages of her life. Both actresses have the challenge of portraying the complex facets of the young woman.

Ahn Jae Hong (Be Melodramatic) will play Ju Oh Nam, a colleague of Kim Mo Mi who hides romantic feelings for her. Meanwhile, Yeom Hye Ran (The Glory) will play Ju Oh Nam’s mother who would do anything to protect her son.

What is “The Masked Girl” about?

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the k-drama introduces us to the life of Kim Mo Mi, an office worker who has always dreamed of being a star. Although she thinks her face is unattractive, she is proud of her figure; so every night she puts on a mask and works as an online streamer. What begins as an escape from her daily routine soon spirals into unexpected events when she becomes involved in a disturbing event.

The trailer, with images loaded with color and contrast, shows Kim Mo Mi dancing to the music and asking her audience if she looks pretty. However, the atmosphere changes drastically when she is shown next to a lifeless body, holding a knife. This scene, along with other equally disturbing scenes, heightens the intrigue for this story. What murders does the teaser refer to? Who are the victims?

The series is directed and written by Kim Yong Hoon, a 49th International Film Festival Rotterdam award-winner for his film Beasts Clawing at Straws, and produced by Bon Factory, the company responsible for hits like True Beauty.

The first season of The Masked Girl will arrive on Netflix on August 18.
