In a morally failing society, underprivileged people engage in deadly competitions for the entertainment of others. If you are now thinking of the Netflix hit series ” Squid Game “, you are not wrong – but the idea is a bit older.
Gladiator fights between the poor and the disenfranchised to entertain decadent patricians are a real phenomenon of European antiquity and are also taken up in Suzanne Collins’ series of novels “The Hunger Games”.
The dystopian civilization on former US territory portrayed in the 2012 film adaptation is also reminiscent in many ways of ancient Rome, where amphitheaters still bear witness to the gruesome games of the past.
Jennifer Lawrence struggles to survive
In the dictatorship of Panem, the inhabitants of twelve districts are starving. Once a year, however, one girl and one boy from each district can fight for food for their fellow citizens – in so-called “Hunger Games”.
This voyeuristic gladiator fight among children is of course raised as an entertainment event to pass the time of the capital city residents living in luxury. The destitute rural population is also forced to watch.
In addition to Jennifer Lawrence, who takes part in the deadly games in place of her young sister, “The Hunger Games” also features many other stars with Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland and rock star Lenny Kravitz.
