“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” dominated the box office in the United States and Canada for the fourth consecutive weekend, grossing $40 million for a global total of more than $1 billion, according to estimates released Sunday.

The Nintendo video game adaptation dominated all of April and broke records. This weekend it had little competition, although that will change next week when “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” opens.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is expected to easily surpass $1 billion at the box office as a global total on Sunday, making it the 10th film to reach that level and the first since 2019. It carries a domestic total of $490 million, and the international total is even higher. It grossed $68.3 million overseas this weekend, bringing its international total to $532.5 million.

In second place was the horror film “Evil Dead Rise,” which in its second week dropped 50% to $12.2 million.

Among this weekend’s releases, the best performer was “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” an adaptation of Judy Blume’s book. It grossed $6.8 million when shown in 3,343 theaters. The film, written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, had a budget of $30 million.

The Finnish action film “Sisu” opened in 1,006 theaters, grossing $3.3 million. This was a good result for an international film, and it is unusual for such films to receive national exposure.

The boxer George Foreman biopic, “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World,” grossed $3 million in 3,054 theaters.

“Polite Society,” about a young British-Pakistani girl, grossed $800,000 when shown in 927 theaters.

Meanwhile, the re-release of “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” grossed $4.7 million when shown in only 475 theaters. Disney re-released the film to commemorate its 40th anniversary.
