Russian Netflix users have launched a class action lawsuit against the streaming giant for leaving the Russian market, demanding 60 million rubles ($726,000) in compensation, the RIA news agency reported on Wednesday.

Netflix Inc. said in March that it was suspending its service in Russia and had temporarily halted all future projects and acquisitions in the country while it assessed the impact of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Today, a law firm representing the interests of Netflix users filed a class action lawsuit against the American service Netflix before the Moscow Khamovnicheski District Court,” the RIA quoted the firm Chernishov, Lukoianov & Partners.

The reason for the lawsuit is the violation of the rights of Russian users due to Netflix’s unilateral refusal to provide services in Russia.”

Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Dozens of foreign companies have announced the temporary closure of shops and factories in Russia or said they are leaving permanently since Moscow began its “special military operation” — as the Kremlin calls it — in Ukraine on February 24. Ukraine and the West say Russia has launched an unprovoked war of aggression against its neighbor.
