Tyrone’s Clone

As its trailer indicates, They Cloned Tyrone recounts the adventures of an unlikely trio. A con man, a pimp and a sex worker stumble upon a chilling scene: someone is experimenting on humans. Such a discovery summons them to investigate the mysterious conspiracy that threatens their neighborhood. So goes the film directed and written by Juel Taylor that hit Netflix this July 21.

The feature film offers a mix of comedy mystery and social satire in a sci-fi tale. Much of the magic in the film is born from the synergy of its stellar cast consisting of Jamie Foxx, Teyonah Parris and John Boyega.

The synopsis

Set in an impoverished African-American neighborhood, the film follows Tyrone Fontaine (Boyega), a drug dealer facing problems with a new rival in the area, who is also burdened by unpaid debts to pimp Slick Charles (Fox). After a fight in which he is mortally wounded, Tyrone shows up the next day completely unharmed.

The miraculous event arouses the curiosity of Yo-Yo (Parris) and his special talent for chasing enigmas. Together, the three characters will unravel the truth of a creepy subway laboratory related to cloning and experiments on the area’s African-American population.

The cast

Jamie Foxx – actor, comedian and record producer – gives a memorable performance as Slick Charles, an agent in the prostitution business who is always complaining about the women who work with him. Teyonah Parris, the iconic Monica Rambeau in the UCM, becomes Yo-Yo, a female fan of Nancy Drew’s detective stories.

On the other hand, John Boyega, known for his role in Star Wars, brings to life Tyrone, the character at the center of the mystery. Previously, this role had been offered to Brian Tyre Henry.

For Boyega, there is an exercise in challenging stereotypes in the film’s three unlikely heroes. “Then you find that this entrepreneur had dreams that were more nuanced than the life he leads now. You find that ‘the pro’ is well educated and compares herself to Nancy Drew in the way her mind works. And you find out that the hustler is dealing with trauma, after the loss of his younger brother,” the actor indicated to TUDUM Netflix. “You’ll see beyond the stereotype, like the layers of an onion come out one after another.”
