NEW YORK – “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” an adaptation of the popular fantasy game, was the top-grossing film this weekend in the United States and Canada, grossing $38.5 million.
The Paramount Pictures and eOne film – and starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page and Hugh Grant – replaced “John Wick: Chapter 4.”

“Dungeons & Dragons” cost $150 million to produce, so it’s hoping to do well at the box office in April and abroad to kick-start a new franchise. It debuted internationally with US$33 million.

“John Wick: Chapter 4,” which opened last weekend with $73.5 million, slipped to second place with $28.2 million. While that’s a considerable drop, the Keanu Reeves-starring film has already racked up $122.8 million domestically and, after taking in another $35 million internationally, has $245 million globally.

Along with “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Creed III” and “Scream VI,” “Dungeons & Dragons” joins the list of films that have exceeded expectations in March. Universal Pictures hopes to continue the trend next weekend with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”

Those films have helped push the box office to 28.7% above where it was this time last year, according to David A. Gross, director of Franchise Entertainment Research. Still, the box office is still not at pre-pandemic levels, as it is 28.8% below where it was in 2017-2019.

“Dungeons & Dragons” had little competition this weekend. “His Only Son” debuted with $5.3 million, while “A Thousand and One” debuted with $1.8 million from 926 theaters for Focus Features.
