The extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe pushes Marvel Studios to recruit actors and actresses with a vengeance in order to bring to life on the big screen the superheroes and villains who inhabit this cinematic universe.

After Salma Hayek in The Eternals, Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man: No Way Home or Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight, it’s Charlize Theron’s turn to join the ranks of the Avengers.

Charlize Theron in the MCU

Even before the official release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in cinemas, the presence of Charlize Theron had leaked on the networks. Watching the film directed by Sam Raimi, and more particularly the first post-credits scene, only confirmed what we had already known for several days, the South African actress has indeed integrated the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

She will make a future appearance in this expanding multiverse, especially in the hypothetical, but highly probable Doctor Strange 3 which has not yet been formalized by Kevin Feige and the Disney teams.

The famous post-credits scenes, essential to Marvel Studios stamped productions, revealed to us the existence of another character capable of traveling between dimensions who is interpreted by Charlize Theron in person.

The actress born on August 7, 1975 in South Africa is particularly known for her performances in Hancock (2008), Prometheus (2012), Fast and Furious 8 (2017), Atomic Blonde (2017), The Old Guard (2020) on Netflix and of course the acid chase Mad Max : Fury Road (2015) by George Miller.

Clea the Sorceress

Charlize Theron has therefore officially joined the ever richer cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or Multiverse), but to interpret which character? From what we have been able to see and from the source material, namely the Maison des Idées comic books, the South African actress embodies Clea (the Sorceress) in the next productions of Marvel studios.

One question still remains unanswered: Who is Clea? If comic book lovers already know the answer, MCU fans are not necessarily up to date.

Clea (the Sorceress), sometimes referred to as Doctor Clea Strange, is a fictional character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, first appearing in the November 1964 issue of Strange Tales #126.

She is according to the story arcs and universes the disciple, lover and wife of Stephen Strange. Clea is a mystical hybrid related to the Fatline race, immortal beings made of pure energy. Daughter of Umar and the demonic tyrant Dormammu, she possesses immense magical powers.

At first glance and from the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU’s Clea is clearly driven and adept at tearing apart the veil separating dimensions.

At the end of the film, she urges Doctor Stephen Strange to follow her in order to stop an interdimensional incursion, the telescoping of two realities on the verge of destroying each other.
