The Marvel series focuses on the charismatic witch, played by Kathryn Hahn, and her life outside of Westview. It is confirmed to arrive on Disney+ in 2024.

Kathryn Hahn will reprise her role as Agatha Harkness in the new Disney+ series, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries. WandaVision’s Blu-Ray release included a special clip from the production where Hahn and the creators offered a look at the creative process behind the production. Lead screenwriter and executive producer Jac Schaeffer shared that she talked with Marvel about developing another project and noted that all of their proposals “included a story line about Agatha.”

“I remember Kevin [Feige] said to me, ‘We should think about a real Agatha show.’ And I was like, ‘Where do I sign on for that job?”‘” recounted Schaeffer in the behind-the-scenes. For co-executive producer Mary Livanos, the witch is a “character is so deep, emotional and dangerous” and adds that “continuing Agatha’s story and getting to know her more was immediately an imperative for us as creatives. For Agatha Harkness there would be nothing more delightful than to star in a spin-off.”

As recalled, the evil Agatha had her first appearance in the Scarlet Witch series, aired in early 2021. Her return will be about three years later, and there is nothing but “excitement and enthusiasm” to be part of this project for the lead actress. “Playing a witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is amazing,” said Kathryn Hahn in official statements released by the platform.

Cast and synopsis of the first episode

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries will also feature performances by Aubrey Plaza as Rio, Joe Locke, Patti LuPone as Lilia, Sasheer Zamata as Jen K and Ali Ahn as Alice. Other cast members include Emma Caulfield Ford, Maria Dizzia, Miles Gutierrez-Riley and Okwui Okpokwasili. In addition, a brief description of the first episode was revealed via the U.S. Copyright Office’s Public Records System: “We see Agatha Harkness (Hahn) finally break free from a spell she’s been trapped in. She can’t wait to return to her old, deadly ways, only to discover that she is without powers. The only way forward for her is to embark on a dangerous quest to regain her powers with the help of an unlikely friend or two.”

Title changes in the Agatha series.

With the arrival of WandaVision on Blu-ray, a first look at filming was also presented and sees Agatha walking through a forest alongside Marvel Universe newcomer Joe Locke (Heartstopper). The spin-off, which wrapped filming before the SAG-AFTRA strike, was originally announced with the title Agatha: House of Harkness. The latter changed to Agatha: Coven of Chaos in July 2022 and then to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries in September 2023. A source inside the show told Variety that these title changes suggest Agatha is up to her old tricks.

On WandaVision, Kathryn Hahn was first introduced as Agnes, Wanda and Vision’s nosy neighbor, before it was revealed that she was actually Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch. The last encounter with her in the series was when Wanda traps her in Westview, forcing her with her powers to return to her Agnes persona. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in mid-2024.
