Maluma won in the Best Latin Artist category at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA), an award that held its 28th edition in Budapest, capital of Hungary.

“This goes to Medellín, Colombia, which is no longer Pablo Escobar anymore, now it is ‘Maluma, baby’ and J Balvin”, said the Colombian when collecting his award at the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna, the first to be presented at the musical ceremony.

In his speech, Maluma thanked his team and his mother (“Mom, I love you,” he said in Spanish), after declaring himself “Very proud to be Latino.”

“It was hard getting here”, Maluma expressed very happy holding his award. The musician also took the stage to perform his single “Mama Tetema.”

His distinction as Best Latin Artist is even more meritorious if the category of his rivals for that award is taken into account: Bad Bunny, J. Balvin, Rosalía, Rauw Alejandro and Shakira.

Maluma, who also came from winning last year in the category of Best Latin Artist at the Video Music Awards (VMA), the American branch of these MTV awards, adds the EMA to a trajectory also endorsed by the Latin Grammy 2018 for the best contemporary pop vocal album that he got for “FAME”.

The musician, singer and composer born in Medellín in 1994, began his recording career with the album “Magia” (2012), which was followed by four more, until “Papi Juancho” (2020), which includes his hit “HAWAI”.

In addition to him, other Latin figures who have been awarded according to their region in the moments prior to the MTV EMAs gala have been Alemán (best Latin artist in North America), Tini (best Latin artist in South America), Sebastián Yatra (as the best Latin artist in Central America) and Manu Gavassi (the best Brazilian artist).
