Britney Spears gave details of her lightning wedding to Jason Alexander in her book The Woman in Me, due to be released on October 24. According to TIME magazine, which has obtained a copy of the book, the singer gives details of how the idea came about for her and her childhood best friend to make a union official – even though they weren’t in love with each other.

During a New Year’s Eve trip to Las Vegas in 2004, where Paris Hilton was also present, after days of partying Britney and Alexander ended up spending the night together. “I don’t even remember that night, but from what I found out, he and I stayed in the hotel room and stayed up late watching movies – Mona Lisa Smile and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – then we had the brilliant idea of going to the Little White Chapel at half past three in the morning,” she wrote in her book.

Britney Spears also reveals that the fact that she was bored with her life at the time was one of the motivations that led her impulsively to the altar. “People asked me if I loved him. To be clear: he and I were not in love,” she writes. “I was honestly very drunk – and probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored,” she confessed.

As soon as her family found out about the wedding they ‘made a big fuss over innocent fun’, according to the singer. “Everyone has a different perspective on it, but I didn’t take it too seriously. I thought a silly wedding in Las Vegas was something people could do as a joke. Then my family came and acted like I’d started World War III. I cried the rest of the time I was in Vegas,” she admitted in the book.

Under pressure from her family, Britney and Alexander annulled their marriage after 55 hours, which, in the artist’s view, was one of the first times her family tried to control her life.

“My family was so against the wedding that I began to think that maybe I had accidentally committed a brilliant act,” she writes. “Because I realized: something about me being under their control and not having a stronger connection with another person became very, very important to them…. Perhaps it’s worth mentioning that, at this point, I was supporting them financially.”

Years later, when Britney was walking down the aisle with Sam Asghari, the singer’s ex-husband Jason Alexander surprised her by breaking into her wedding. At the venue, he tried to broadcast an Instagram live, but was soon detained and arrested for trespassing.
