- In New Jersey, as in the entire United States, identification cards are reserved for all those people who, for whatever reason, cannot or do not want to drive.
Although processed at the offices of the Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC), identification cards are reserved for people who do not drive in the state of New Jersey. This document, similar to the one that exists in other states, can only be used as a form of identification, both for people over 14 years of age and for other residents who – for one reason or another – cannot or do not want to drive. Therefore, once issued, the identification card does not grant the privilege of driving.
The identification card issued by the NJMVC can also be processed by people whose driver’s license has been suspended for traffic violations committed in the state, with the intention that they can have an identification during the time that the sanction will last.
How to get a non-driver ID in New Jersey?
As with in-state driver’s licenses, the NJVMC recommends a series of steps for people to follow to apply for a non-driver identification card at one of its offices. The steps to follow are those:
- Make an appointment and go to the nearest NJMVC Licensing Center on the agreed day.
- Complete a non-driver permit/license/ID application form.
- Consign the 6 identification points necessary for the application process.
- Pay the fee corresponding to the procedure ($24). The NJMVC accepts debit or credit cards, money orders, and cash. When it comes to requesting a duplicate due to theft or loss of the document, the NJMVC only requires an $11 fee. When it comes to a renewal, the NJMVC does not impose any fee for the document.
- Allow NJMVC staff to take appropriate photos. They must show the full extent of the face, from the forehead to the chin. In this sense, this state agency asks people to notify or express any medical or religious reason why they cannot show their face, if any.
After completing the process, applicants receive the identification card at the mailing address they have noted on the application form.
If the applicant has some type of disability, she can also carry out the steps described above to obtain a non-driver identification card. The only additional document they need to submit is a Non-Driver Identification Request Form for Medical Certification for the Blind or Disabled. This form must be completed by a physician. In this way, the permanent document will be able to offer people and authorities information about their status.
