Preparing a quality mortar is the first step to achieving an optimum result on your building site. However, many construction professionals, even the most experienced, still make mistakes when preparing mortar.

The mixture needs to be homogeneous and free of bubbles to be effective. Otherwise, the result may not be to your liking and, depending on the situation, it may not meet the minimum requirements to continue with the work.

In this article, we’re going to teach you how to prepare mortar, as well as giving you several details about this procedure. Check it out!

What are the types of mortar?

The types of mortar are as follows:

  • Masonry: masonry mortar is made by mixing one part cement and three parts sand, with the possibility of adding additives to the mixture. When waterproofing agents are added, this is the mortar most commonly used on construction sites because of its anti-seepage properties.
  • Plaster: plaster is formed by mixing one part cement, two parts lime and eight parts sand. This mortar is applied when there is unevenness in the wall and is used to correct imperfections.
  • Concrete blocks: this is one of the most resistant materials used in construction. It is made up of 1 part cement and 6 parts sand.
  • Plaster: plaster is thin and consists of one part cement, two parts lime and nine parts sand. It is used to finish construction work.
  • Adhesive: with high setting power, this mortar is suitable for large façades and tall buildings.

How to prepare and apply?

Preparing mortar is a routine procedure on construction sites, with just two steps:

  • Mix the cement, lime and sand according to the mortar you want, without adding water. Do this with the help of a hoe. Note: if you use lime, add it last, after mixing the cement and sand.
  • After dry mixing, make a mound of the mortar and dig a hole in its center. Add water until the mixture is pasty, neither too hard nor too soft.

You can use clever tools to make mortar, simply mix all the ingredients together and use the mixer with the appropriate beaters. The dough will be ready in no time!
