For many people, especially millennials and Gen Z, renting a jet may be a dream they want to turn into reality: here are the prices

Who hasn’t fantasized about taking a trip on a private jet when they see that celebrities they admire have their own planes, may not be out of this world. Perhaps for many of us these fantasies are far from reality, but it doesn’t hurt to let your imagination run wild and learn the facts about how much it would cost to rent a private jet in the United States. Maybe one day you will be able to fulfill that dream and you already have the pertinent information to achieve it.

Many people, especially those belonging to Generation Y (millennials) and Gen Z, value experiences more than fulfilling other financial goals. They may not save to buy a house or for retirement; but they are capable of going to great lengths to scrape together enough money to live like a king one day, even if it means going into debt.

The price to rent or charter a jet has dropped in recent years, stemming from the pandemic, as a way to attract consumers. In some cases, it’s on par with what you’d pay for first- or business-class commercial airline tickets. However, unless you have the money to spend, you can still expect to spend thousands of dollars.

The costs to charter a private jet vary depending on a number of factors, ranging from the type of plane to the destination. Typically, you could pay anywhere from $2,000 to $11,000 or more per billable flight hour, according to Paramount Business Jets, a private jet charter service. “Billable” flight time refers to the time the plane is in the air and does not include taxi time on the tarmac.

Based on the size of the private jet, these are the prices they might cost for travel within the United States:

  • The most affordable private jets (turboprops, very light jets and light executive jets) generally cost between $2,600 and $3,500 per flight hour.
  • Midsize or super midsize jets range from $3,200 to $6,000 per hour.
  • For heavy, large and ultra-long-range jets traveling longer distances, the cost typically ranges from $5,600 to $11,000 per hour.

The listed costs could be higher for international travel.

According to another private jet booking company, Air Charter Service, charter rates range from $4,450 to $6,400 per hour for midsize jets manufactured by companies such as Bombardier, Cessna, Hawker and Embraer. Flight times for these aircraft range from three to seven hours.

For heavy jets, prices range from $6,250 to $12,400 per hour. Some of these aircraft are manufactured by commercial airline manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus. Flight times range from five to 14 hours.

The prices you pay to charter a private jet cover basics such as:

  • Fuel
  • Landing fees
  • Airport fees
  • Labor costs

And you may face additional costs for:

  • Catering services
  • In-flight concierge
  • Wi-Fi
  • Cleaning fees (if you make a mess during the flight)
  • Overnight crew accommodations

Even if you are going by private jet, you must comply with the same rules of commercial jet travel, such as going through private jet terminals for security and customs purposes. You also need to carry identification, passport or visa, depending on your destination.
