TUCSON – President Joe Biden has nominated Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus to head Customs and Border Protection (CBP), according to a White House statement.
Biden also appointed Ur Mendoza Jaddou, an expert on immigration issues, to be director of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Both Magnus and Jaddou were strong critics of Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
Under Trump’s presidency, Magnus openly criticized attempts to starve municipalities that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration policies, arguing that doing so will harm relations between communities and law enforcement agencies.
Magnus was appointed to head the Tucson Police Department in 2016 after serving a decade in Richmond, California, according to his online biography.
For his part, Jaddou was most recently the director of DHS Watch, a group harshly critical of Trump’s efforts to reduce legal and illegal immigration.
Biden will also nominate other leaders for the US Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, it will appoint John Tien as undersecretary; Jen Easterly as director of the Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Security Agency; Jonathan Meyer for the position of General Counsel and Robert Silvers for the position of Assistant Secretary for Strategy, Policy and Plans.
