Germany registers 306 deaths from coronavirus in one day and 20,407 new infections

Germany registered 20,407 new infections with coronavirus in the last 24 hours – almost 4,000 less than a week ago – and 306 fatalities – compared to 201 last Thursday – according to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) updated last midnight.

The RKI once again warns that when interpreting the data, it must be taken into account that in the days around Easter, as a rule, fewer people go to the doctor and that therefore fewer tests were carried out.

In addition, the regional competent authorities may not have reported the confirmed positives on a daily basis.

In the country as a whole, the cumulative incidence in seven days fell to 105.7 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to 110.1 yesterday and 134.2 a week ago.

The peak incidence was registered on December 22 with 197.6 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in one week and on January 28 it fell below 100 for the first time in three months with a downward trend that stayed for a few weeks.

The maximum number of infections was registered on December 18 with 33,777 new infections in one day and the number of deaths on January 14, with 1,244.

The weekly reproduction factor is 0.76, which implies that every 100 infected infects on average another 76 people.

The number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic totals 2,930,852 -of which some 2,631,400 are recorded as recovered patients- and the number of fatalities with or from covid-19 amounts to 77,707.

The RKI estimates that active cases currently number about 221,800.

In the intensive care units, 4,439 patients with covid-19 had been admitted on Wednesday -which represents 84 more in one day-, of which 2,478 -56% and 81 more compared to Tuesday- need assisted respiration, according to data from the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI).

In one day, the ucis received 548 new patients with covid-19 and 116 of those admitted died.

Until Thursday in Germany 4,633,859 people had received the two doses of the vaccine – 5.6% of the population – and 10,800,637 (13%), at least one.

In the last 24 hours, 227,128 citizens received the first dose of the vaccine and another 94,911, the second.
