Fire in a data center of the provider OVHcloud in Strasbourg, France, causes the loss of player data in the survival game Rust. This was reported by developer Facepunch Studios. It is not possible to restore the data.
25 large EU servers initially remained offline as a result of the incident. In the meantime, however, the first official servers are back. According to media reports, people were not injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is still unclear.
Update:
25 of our EU servers remain offline due to a fire at OVH Datacenter in the early hours of this morning. Unfortunately, the fire destroyed SBG-2 building. We're expecting a large amount of data loss across the affected servers. We'll share more news when we can.

What happens now
Facepunch had rented these servers for the EU. It remains to be seen whether a replacement can be found quickly so that all affected EU servers can go online again in a timely manner. The developers want to share new information as soon as it becomes available. At least the first servers with the progress reset are already going online again:
We've got EU servers slowly coming back online – All game progress is reset.

[EU] Facepunch 4 – 137.74.4.207:28020

Rust carries out a scheduled wipe on the official servers every first Thursday of the month, i.e. the game progress is reset monthly anyway. However, it is not clear whether private dedicated servers on which players are not forced to wipe are also affected.
Far-reaching effects
The fire is said to have captured the data center of the provider OVHcloud at around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday night and subsequently completely destroyed it. The incident has also resulted in significant disruption to the local infrastructure.
For example, the websites of the cities of Vichy and Saverne and the public data website data.gouv.fr were temporarily disrupted. The crypto dealer Coinhouse and a local brewery were also affected by the server failure.
The extent of the fire was enormous: even German firefighters from the city of Kehl had to be called in to help contain the flames.
OVH-Chef Octave Klaba covers the events on his Twitter timeline. OVHcloud provides information on its own website about servers affected by the incident.
