The management of Andrew Cuomo as governor of the state of New York it would not have been so striking without it coronavirus. The pandemic, says the Daily News, allowed the Democrat to stand out in the absence of a leader in the United States to lead the fight against the pandemic.

The portal notes that, while everyone paid attention to the possible ‘impeachment’ of President Donald Trump – and the president himself only dealt with that – he took action on the matter to stop the COVID-19.

The outlet explains:

The conferences of Cuomo, which showed stability and confidence in the midst of global fear, contrasted with the erratic promises of Trump, who spoke of miracle cures and recommended drinking bleach, elevating his status beyond New York”.

It is true that he made mistakes, and that, just as his actions saved lives, they also caused others to be lost. But Cuomo it gained notoriety and some prestige in the United States.

In fact, television host Stephen Colbert – in a video posted on You Tube last year– highlighted that there was a trend on Twitter (#PresidentCuomo) who realized that his popularity had overflowed.

In the video, he scoffed:

The obsession with the governor has gotten weird and I’m surprised this was a note [del portal Daily Beast]: ‘Pierced or not? The mystery about the nipples of […] Andrew Cuomo?’”.

COLLAPSE

However, the last few days have not been good for Cuomo. There are two controversies that are cracking his popularity.

According to the Syracuse.com portal, the FBI investigates the governor for his handling of the coronavirus in nursing homes (or homes).

It would have been his secretary, Melissa DeRosa, who noted: “We ‘freeze’ data on COVID-19 deaths among residents of those care centers, fearing that President Trump and federal prosecutors ‘will use the real numbers against us’”.

To this must be added another scandal: Cuomo is accused of sexual harassment.

The New York Times interviewed Charlotte Bennett, a 25-year-old who worked with him as a health assistant and counselor, until he resigned in November. The media notes:

“[Ella] claims he asked her questions about her sex life, if she was monogamous, and if she had ever had sex with an older man”.

This conversation would have taken place on June 5, when she was alone with Cuomo in his office. He also would have asked her if she thought that age could make a difference in a romantic relationship and that she was in favor of having relationships with women in their 20s.

Cuomo claimed that he considered himself her mentor and that he never did anything inappropriate.

Bennett added: “I understood that he wanted to sleep with me, and I felt very uncomfortable and scared. And I was thinking about how I was going to get out of that one, assuming I was going to lose my job.”.

“The New York Times” notes that Bennett has not indicted Cuomo because he just wants to get on with his life.

But Bennett has not been the only one to point out this inappropriate behavior.

Lindsey Boylan, who also worked with Cuomo, claimed that the governor harassed her on several occasions between 2016 and 2018, including giving her an “unsolicited” kiss on the lips.

Cuomo denied the accusations until, yesterday, he declared that “regretted“If your comments had been”misunderstood”.

It’s a statement, Cuomo gave more details:

Sometimes I think I’m being playful and I make jokes that I think are funny … I don’t want to offend and I just want to bring a bit of lightness and conversation to what is a very serious topic. Now I understand that my interactions may have been insensitive or too personal.”.

While he denied acting inappropriately, it appears that what will follow will be an investigation to determine whether his behavior was inappropriate.
