Manuel Marín was charged with second degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of manslaughter.
In addition to two other charges, which are criminal conspiracy to commit kidnapping and forcible confinement.
After nearly five hours of deliberations on Thursday, the jury found Manuel Marín guilty of “manslaughter, criminal conspiracy to commit kidnapping and forcible confinement.
“We are happy that the family finally got justice after so many years,” said the prosecutor handling the case.
Marin, now 69, has been charged with second degree murder.
For the June 2011 murder of businessman Camilo Salazar, lover of his then wife and whose body authorities say appeared tortured, decapitated and burned in an area near the Everglades. A case that involved three other people, who have already faced justice.
The co-founder of Presidente Supermarkets stayed abroad for several years. Marín was taken into custody in Spain and extradited in 2019 to Miami Dade County where he was required by law enforcement authorities.
After the verdict, prosecutor Katherine Fernández Rundle spoke in a press release.
“With today’s guilty verdict, a Miami Dade jury recognized the power of Marin’s jealousy, which led him to direct the death and torture of Camilo Salazar. Marín’s flight to the Spain has only prolonged the agony of the Salazar family, awaiting the justice that arrived today.”
Relatives of Manuel Marín present in the room, did not want to make statements.
The defense lawyer for his part told us this afternoon that for the moment there will be no day of judgment, since they will appeal.
