A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend in Anaheim last week.
Aaron Romo, 36, is charged with the murder of Mirelle Mateus, 24, with whom he was romantically involved, Anaheim Police Department Sgt. Jon McClintock said. Authorities also believe Romo has assaulted other women in the past.
On Friday, police found La Palma resident Mateus dead in an apartment in the 1900 block of S. Union Street, McClintock said. Officers were responding to reports of “suspicious circumstances” at the residence.
After determining that Mateus had been murdered, they identified Romo as a suspect. Later that day, Romo was arrested in Riverside County. Romo is currently being held without bond. It was not immediately possible to determine if he had a lawyer.
On a page to raise funds for his funeral, Mateus’ sister said Mateus was a student and a “hardworking person, a loving daughter, an amazing sister” and “the best” aunt to his niece and nephews.
As the investigation continues, detectives do not want to release the evidence against Romo, or discuss a possible motive, McClintock said.
Investigators believe Romo assaulted other women and want the victims to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Anaheim Police Department at 714-321-3669. They can also contact Orange County Crime Stoppers by calling 855-TIP-OCCS or visiting their website.
