It was in 2013 that a series relating the life of the Viking people landed on television. Despite the fact that there have been throughout the history of cinema and series productions that showed characters from the Nordic countries, none had gone as far as they ended up doing. vikings (vikings its original name).
The fiction was born thanks to the screenwriter and producer Michael Hirst who conceived this production as a miniseries of one season of 9 episodes. But the success and reception from the public was so great that the series began to make history and of course added episodes until it reached the impressive number of 89 airings.
The initial story focused on the life of a viking who existed in reality (although here many events of his life were recreations) named Ragnar Lothbrock (played by Travis Fimmel), a warrior who was the leader of his people, conquered distant lands and imposed his beliefs in all the cities where he arrived. vikings It was an account of the way of life of these Norse inhabitants who were warriors, merchants and in many cases explorers in the Middle Ages.
Ragnar begins as a simple farmer who lived with his wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and their children, but had a vision to leave the borders of his city and for that he knew he had to have good boats. Thus, he comes into contact with an expert and somewhat unstable shipbuilder such as Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) who becomes a pivotal piece in Ragnar’s eventually becoming the Vikings’ most powerful conquering warrior.
Ragnar then decides to go out into the world because he is frustrated by the politics of Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne), who was reluctant to conquer the uncharted lands of the west. With the support of his wife Lagetha and his inner strength, they manage to overthrow this king and Ragnar becomes the leader of the Vikings. But this series not only covered the universe of wars and clashes but also introduced the audience to the Vikings way of life, mythology and beliefs. She was also responsible for showing the role of women at the time and the clashes of their religion with the Catholicism that reigned at that time in what would later be England.
It was a series that undoubtedly marked television and the way of telling the stories of the people who started the world as it is known today. A neat story in each of its scenes where it has not been contaminated by any current vision of the 21st century, where psychoanalysis has made family ties understood differently (to name but one). The conquest and struggles for power, adding to the desire within the family, the desire to be masters of the world and this ephemeral look at earthly life gave this story a different imprint which marked the universe of the series.
vikings It was a global event that spawned many other series that emulated what Hirst was proposing in this production, as was the case with The Last Kingdom. Similarly, after the series ended, the first spin-off arrived on Netflix called Vikings: Walhalla It already has two seasons.
The series had a total of six seasons which progressed in time and spawned Ragnar’s successors, his children. The fiction is currently to be seen in full on Netflix with its six seasons and as a kind of tribute for 10 years, the History 2 signal (where it originally aired vikings) will air the entire production starting Monday, March 6, Monday through Friday nights with a new episode.
