The US president, Joe Biden, has suffered a lapse again that has caused new questions about his mental clarity. Biden surprised attendees at a White House conference on hunger on Wednesday by asking if Jackie Walorski, a Republican congresswoman who died in August, was in the audience. It was a repeated question.

“Jackie, are you here? Where’s Jackie? She was going to be here,” said the 79-year-old Democratic president.

The Republican, Representative from Indiana, died in a car accident and had promoted a project of bipartisan legislation to move forward today’s conference, in which funds worth about 8,000 million dollars have been promised to end hunger in the United States in 2030.

The digital NPR recalled this Wednesday that the president and the first lady, Jill Biden, issued a statement in August expressing their condolences praising the collaboration established with Walorski and underlining that she was a “unique” representative.

The White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, today tried to divert attention about the president’s ruling.

“Today’s event was important. One about food security and how we’re going to take steps to end hunger by 2030, and that’s something the president takes very seriously. She was very present to her. In two days (Biden) will see her family to honor her and her work that she has done,” she said when asked by the press.

This month, in an interview on the program “60 minutes”, Biden was asked what he thought of those who doubt that at his age he is no longer qualified for the position.

“Look at me,” replied the president, who said he respects people saying he is older, but he insisted that he is fine and that he does not feel old and neither with physical or mental problems that prevent him from serving as president.
