Xi Jinping renewed his threat against Taiwan, saying ‘China’s reunification is essential’

Taiwan has been governed autonomously under the official name of the Republic of China since 1949, when KMT nationalists retreated there after losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communists. Beijing therefore continues to consider it a rogue province and claims its sovereignty.

Xi became China’s most powerful leader for generations when the NPC ratified his five-year extension as president of the world’s most populous country.

Xi, 69, on Monday thanked thousands of delegates at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for the appointment, pledging to “take the needs of the country as my mission and the interests of the people as my measure”.

“People’s trust is the biggest driver, and it’s also a big responsibility on my shoulders,” he added.

“The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process,” he said.
