the president of China, Xi Jinpingproclaimed on Monday that “Reunification” with Taiwan is “essential for the revitalization of China”in a speech delivered at the closing session of the National People’s Congress (ANP, Legislatives), the country’s main political event each year.

Xi assured that reunification is “a common aspiration of the Chinese nation” and stressed the need to “oppose external forces” and “secessionists”.

The president, re-elected last Friday for a third presidential term (2023-2028) unprecedented among his predecessors, called for respecting the “one China principle” and “adhering to the ‘1992 consensus'”that Taipei and Beijing recognize that there is only one China, although they disagree on the “real” China.

Xi also stressed the need to “promote the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Straitafter a year in which tensions between Beijing and Taipei reached levels not seen in decades when US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island last August. .

“We must fully promote the the modernization of national defense and armed forces, and transform the people’s armed forces into a great steel wall that effectively safeguards the interests of national sovereignty, security and developmentXi said at the closing session of the country’s top legislature.

“Security is the foundation of development, while stability is a prerequisite for prosperity“, he added.

Taiwan has been governed autonomously under the official name of the Republic of China since 1949, when KMT nationalists retreated there after losing the Chinese Civil War to the Communists. Beijing therefore continues to consider it a rogue province and claims its sovereignty.

Xi became China’s most powerful leader for generations when the NPC ratified his five-year extension as president of the world’s most populous country.

Xi, 69, on Monday thanked thousands of delegates at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing for the appointment, pledging to “take the needs of the country as my mission and the interests of the people as my measure”.

“People’s trust is the biggest driver, and it’s also a big responsibility on my shoulders,” he added.

“The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation has entered an irreversible historical process,” he said.
