On the morning of March 9, a discovery in the streets of matamorosTamaulipas, surprised both the inhabitants and the authorities of the place, since five men were left behind – handcuffed and alive – accompanied by a card signed by the Scorpio Grouparmed arm of Gulf Cartel.
“The Grupo Escorpiones Gulf Cartel strongly condemns the events of Friday March 3, where unfortunately an innocent person, a working mother, died and four American citizens were kidnapped, two of whom died and therefore We have decided to give to those concernedwho at all times acted under their own determination and indiscipline and against the rules that CDG has always applied (sic.),” the first part of the message read.
Subsequently, the alleged members of the armed cell presented their apologies to the population, as well as to the families of the victims. Specifically, his words were:
“CDG apologizes to Matamorense, relatives of Ms. Arely, the American individuals and families concerned. CDG asks society to be calm because we are committed to ensuring that these errors caused by indiscipline do not happen again and that those responsible pay, whoever they are!!! (sic.)”.
Initially, the attorney general of justice (FGJ) of Tamaulipas treated the subjects as victims of crime due to the conditions in which they were found. However, during initial interviews, they reported their likely involvement in the multiple deprivations of liberty.
For this reason, the Office of the Prosecutor executed arrest warrants against the five men, who were identified as Antonio de Jesús “V”, Luis “V”, Ever Noel “H”, Juan Francisco “L” and Gustavo “M”. They were arrested for the crimes of aggravated kidnapping there simple intentional homicide.
Remember that following what happened on March 3, the death of Arely Pablo Servando33 years old, and were kidnapped Shaeed Woodard, Zindell Brown, Latavia McGee and Eric James Williams. Woodard and Brown were found dead, while McGee and Williams returned to the United States.
This situation generated strong tensions in the border town, since the security forces of Mexico and the United States acted in different joint operations to locate the victims.
Faced with such a scenario, according to journalist Parker Asmann of Insight Crimethe delivery of the alleged members of the Gulf Cartel would have been a maneuver to “run away from what they fear most: a frontal attack led by the US government and Mexican police and military.
“Ultimately, more than an act of good faith, the Gulf Cartel’s ‘apology’ should not be seen as more than a calculated act of self-preservation“, added the specialist in security issues, because this speech contrasts with the multiple atrocities in which the Gulf cartel has been implicated – as well as its cells – over the years.
To name a few, Asmann recalled the Reynosa Massacre of June 19, 2021 which claimed the lives of at least 15 people, including students, workers and the elderly.
Added to this, for example, the San Fernando massacre in August 2010 —in which Los Zetas kidnapped and murdered 72 migrants—and the discovery of 36 clandestine graves with 196 corpses in April 2011also in San Fernando, behind which would also be the group Los Zetas, the former armed wing of CDG.
“There was no apology or asking for forgiveness after the massacre of these migrants or citizens killed in Reynosa”, underlined the journalist in the context of his analysis. It should be mentioned that the wave of violence on March 3 came at the same time as various members of the American Congress insisted that the solution to crimes and drug trafficking would be a Military intervention of this country against the Mexican cartels.
