After beginning the initial count of polling stations after the extraordinary electoral processes for the pending senatorial office nomination of Tamaulipas, the candidate of the Morena-PT coalition declared himself the winner. This is José Ramón Gómez Leal, brother-in-law of former governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca (from PAN).

He J.R.as he is also known, was nominated as Morena’s candidate by the party’s national leader, Mario Delgado, after winning the ballot at the end of December 2022, having been delegate for development programs in Tamaulipas since December 1, 2018.

His political life began in 1997, when at the age of 20 he joined the ranks of the National Action Party (PAN). He is the brother of Mariana, current wife of the former governor of Tamaulipas, who ended her term in 2022.

It was not until 2008 that José Ramón obtained his first important position when he was elected municipal councilor of Reynosa by the PAN, under the municipal presidency of Oscar Luebbert Gutiérrez. He held this position until 2010, when he was elected deputy by proportional representation for the Congress of Tamaulipas.

He held this position from January 1, 2011 to September 30, 2013. During the entity legislature, he served as Chairman of the Communications Commission, as well as Secretary of the Education Commission.

Already in 2013 JR wanted to be a candidate for the municipal presidency of Reynosa in the hands of the blue and white party. However, the political institute, after an internal election, gave the candidacy to Jesús María Moreno Ibarra. However, Gómez Leal challenged the decision and after a recount of the votes he became a candidate.

However, he lost these electoral processes. He was in second place, while the candidate of the Institutional Revolutionary (PRI), José Elías Leal, arrived at the Government Palace.

He resigned from the PAN after almost 20 years of activism and, between 2017 and 2018, he was invited to join the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), a party founded by Andrés Manuel. When AMLO won the presidency of the Republic, José Ramón was appointed delegate for development programs in his entity.

At the end of 2021, the senator of Morena, Américo Villarreal, requested a license to separate from his post to compete for the post of governor of the entity, at the end of the Cabeza de Vaca administration. After the electoral elections, the morenista won became the state executive, separating from his place in the Senate.
