This Wednesday, February 15, is the deadline to apply for the aid.

The day has arrived. This Wednesday, February 15, begins the deadline to apply for the so-called ‘check of 200 euros’, an aid announced by the Government last December that is aimed at facilitating the purchase of food to middle-class families. The request must be made through the electronic headquarters of the Social Security, which is the body in charge of managing the aid, and can be made until March 31.

The Royal Decree-Law 20/2022 (the regulatory text by which the measure is legislated) specifies that these 200 euros are addressed “to those who have been salaried, self-employed or unemployed in 2022, in order to alleviate situations of economic vulnerability, not covered by other benefits of a social nature, as is the case of pensions or the minimum vital income”.

Thus, neither pensioners nor beneficiaries of the minimum vital income can receive the check. In addition, it should be noted that the aid is not granted on an individual basis but is paid per family unit. This means that the income of all the members of the family unit is taken into account when deciding whether or not to grant the 200 euros.

Eligibility requirements

Beyond the aforementioned incompatibilities, the Government specifies on the Moncloa website that, in order to be granted this check, one must have received a full income of less than 27,000 euros per year and have a net worth of less than 75,000 euros. However, the habitual residence is excluded from the calculation of the patrimony.

In order to carry out the sum, the total income of the family members living in the same household is taken into account, i.e. the applicant, his/her spouse or common-law partner, descendants and ascendants up to the second degree. However, the income and assets of people who share an apartment without having a family relationship will not be added together.

The other condition to be a beneficiary of the aid is to have the habitual residence in Spain.

When is the money collected?

As for the payment of the amount associated with the check into the bank account, there is a period of three months, from March 31 (the deadline for submitting applications) to June 30, to make the payment.

In this sense, it is important to take into account that the applications are answered in order of receipt, so that those people who request the aid close to this February 15, should receive those 200 Euros (if they fulfill the mentioned conditions) during the month of April or at the beginning of May.
