As part of the 94th anniversary of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the national leader alexander Alito Moreno Cárdenas announced that in the coming weeks he would begin a path to create “the biggest and deepest reform” that the party has seen in recent years, so that the party’s centenary will be celebrated with a member of the PRI in head of the national executive.

During his speech at the Plutarco Elías Calles auditorium, the former governor of Campeche did not give details of what will be reformed or the changes he has proposed; however, he pointed out What will be the path that the political institute will follow before the National Assembly which is scheduled for next year, alongside the national elections which are scheduled and where, among other positions, the Presidency of the Republic will be renewed.

His message was given a few days after the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) declared the changes invalid that the National Political Council (CPN) carried out on December 19, in particular in the reform that article 83, section XXXVII has undergone, which could extend the mandate of the National Directorate beyond next August.

And it is that the reform has modified one of the lines of the article, since the wording of the article has been changed from “three months” A “90 business days” so that the CPN approves an extension of time, with which it was said that Moreno Cárdenas and Carolina Viggiano Austria, general secretary of the PRI, could extend their mandate because they would remain in power when the electoral process begins next year.

Despite the decision taken by the electoral authority, the institutional revolutionary issued a statement in which he declared as false that the reforms approved in December concerned a possible extension of the mandate, instead they responded to plan B which, at the time, seemed an imminent reality in electoral matters, which is why they considered that the party had to adapt.

“(…) these modifications do not consist in the extension of the mandate of the management, but simply in the adaptation of our statutes to the current electoral regulations which will intervene with the imminent publication of Plan B”

One of the last reforms that the PRI experienced occurred within the framework of the 2018 electoral process, since months before during the XXII Ordinary National Assembly held on August 12, 2017, militancy voted to remove the 10-year membership requirement for those who aspired to be candidates for the presidency of the Republic, a situation that allowed José Antonio Meade to compete in the elections.

The reform was given in article 24 of the statutes of the partyin which it was established that sympathetic, unaffiliated citizens could be candidates, appealing to Article 82 of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States (CPEUM).
