Ukraine said on Tuesday that the websites of the Ministry of Defense and two major state banks were the target of a cyberattack.

The announcement by the Ukrainian communications control body comes under the threat of a possible attack by Russian forces, which are carrying out military exercises on its borders.

Affected sites include Oschadbank and Privat24 two of the largest financial institutions.

The Ministry of Defense site displayed an error message saying the site was “under technical maintenance.”

The watchdog said Privat24 was the target of “a massive denial of service (DDOS) attack”.

“It cannot be ruled out that the aggressor is resorting to dirty tricks,” said the watchdog in reference to Russia.
