Zero-emission cars such as electric cars and their relationship to reducing respiratory illnesses have taken a big leap locally with surprising results.

Although it seems obvious to say it and even more to study it, each time a scientist has before him the possibility of empirically prove a theory, it inevitably will. And the good thing about it is that through it, even the most obvious hypotheses can gain certainty, shape, size, magnitude, and precision, when investigated with the scientific method.

That electric cars promote better air quality is well known, because in the very essence of this mode of mobility, neither emitted nor carbon dioxide (CO2) or nitrogen oxides (NOx) to the environment, but a recent study by the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicinewent a little further on the subject, delivering very interesting data to analyze.

What the researchers wanted was to provide certainty of the impact on people’s health when they ecosystem in which they lead their daily lives, the air improves its quality due to the reduction of pollutant emissions from internal combustion cars in view of the advancement of electric vehicles.

Using publicly available datasets, the researchers conducted the “natural experiment” occurring in California, where many residents have rapidly adopted electric cars or zero-emission lightweight vehicles, also known as the name of ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle).

The method consisted in comparing the data on total ZEV recordthe levels of Air pollution and the emergency room visits asthma-related, statewide between the years 2013 and 2019, when the transition was not yet as pronounced as it is today. The first conclusion they reached was that as the fleet of electrified vehicles increased, emergency room visits for respiratory problems decreased. This was done by taking as a reference the postal codes of the people registered.

The study also made it possible to verify that in the areas of postal codes with low-income populationswhere the adoption of electric mobility is not as accessible to people, the reduction in medical consultations has been much slower.

For the researchers, these data have the value of an imagined global test, but to this idea is added a surprising change of situation in small towns.

“When we think of actions related to climate change, it is often at the global level, but the idea that local changes can improve health from their own community could be a powerful message to the public and to decision makers,” he said. Erika Garciaassistant professor of population science and public health at the Keck School of Medicine and lead author of the study.

These results are also a response to the actions that European governments lead individually and in groups, and support the idea of a emission-free continent they hope to achieve by 2050in addition to knowing that in other parts of the world, higher levels of environmental contamination continue.

But the scientists also believe that this study should be supplemented by others. According to the publication they made in the magazine Total Environmental Scienceadditional impacts of ZEVs should be considered in the future, including emissions related to brake and tire wearthe extraction of materials for its manufacture and the elimination of old cars.

Moreover, switching to ZEV is only part of the solution, because switching to public transport and active transportincluding walking and cycling, are other key ways to improve environmental and public health.
