WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials are warning consumers who have recalled eye drops from two manufacturers due to contamination risks that can lead to vision problems and serious injuries.

These add to a recall last month of Indian-made eye drops linked to an outbreak of drug-resistant infections. One person died and at least five others suffered permanent loss of sight.

There is no indication that the recently withdrawn declines are related to the previous ones.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued recall notices for eye drops distributed by Pharmedica and Apotex, and the companies said they are recalling several lots of their products from the market.

Pharmedica said Friday it was recalling two lots of Purely Soothing 15% MSM eye drops due to issues that “could cause blindness.” These over-the-counter drops relieve irritation. The Phoenix-based company said consumers should immediately stop using them and return them to where they were purchased.

The recall involves some 2,900 vials, the company said. The drops were made in Arizona.

Last week, the FDA issued a similar message from Apotex, recalling six lots of prescription drugs used to treat a certain type of glaucoma. The company said it initiated the recall after noticing cracks in the lids of some jars.

The drops are distributed as brimonidine tartrate ophthalmic solution. 0.15% and were sold between last April and February.

Both companies said they made the recalls after consulting with the FDA.
