Oksana Dramarétska Ambassador Ukraine in Mexico, I speak with infoabe Mexico

It is February 24 A year has passed since the outbreak of large-scale aggression against Ukrainian territory. In the context of this fact, the ambassador of Ukraine in Mexico, Oksana Dramaretskatakes stock of the facts and appeals to the government led by the president Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) to build your support.

Taking stock of what the conflict has left behind, the ambassador stressed — in an interview for GlobeLiveMedia Mexico— that at the start of the war, nearly 13 million Ukrainians had to flee and leave their land.

Although part of the population has now returned home, it is estimated that almost five million citizens still remain outside Ukrainewhich has led to the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the Second World War.

“Almost every day the Russians bomb Ukrainian territory. We know that they are launching their rockets against civilian infrastructure and our energy infrastructure,” assured the diplomat.

According to reports nearly 50% of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is destroyed, which has become a devastating blow to the economy: almost 30% of the country’s GDP will fall in 2022.

As for the toll of the war, the figures are only an estimate yet to be confirmed, according to the UN Human Rights Office, since the start of the invasion more than 8,000 civilians have died. and 13,287 others were injured. However, the true number of victims is said to be “considerably higher”.

“It is very difficult to talk about the number of people killed in this war, but the numbers are supposed to be huge, only in the city of Mariupol, which was completely destroyed, it is estimated that there were dozens of deaths” , this is a summary of this war.

These figures are part of the daily life of the ambassador, who told how complicated the conflict was, because even defining what war is has taken on another meaning.

“When your country is attacked, when someone tries to exterminate your people from the face of the earth, to kill your relatives, friends or compatriots, it doesn’t matter what profession you are: diplomat, doctor or teacher. We all have a goal and a wish: to defeat the enemy who has come to our land. All our efforts are aimed at achieving this goal.

Currently, many of their relatives and loved ones are fighting on the front lines. Among his friends are those who have given their lives in war. “These sacrifices only make us stronger and more determined,” he said.

Oksana Dramaretska makes a parenthesis in her narration. The beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine did not begin in February 2022, the roots of the conflict go back further and lie in 2014 with the intention of annexation of Crimea and part of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk y Luhansk.

From this year until today, the position of the Mexican government has been important.

In the UN Security Committee, Mexico condemned Russian aggression, it did so nine years ago and maintained its position in 2022. Likewise, through the voice of the Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubbonthe rejection of invasion was made explicit.

However, to date, the authorities avoided applying sanctions to the Kremlin, situation which the ambassador called for to be reversed,

“We call on the government to join Western sanctions because there are economic and political sanctions that work because they support, help to end this war because they destroy the Russian military machine,” he reiterated.

In this sense, he assured that currently it is not possible to be “in the middle” of two countries and that although this war is quite distant, Mexico must decide “between an aggressor and a victim”.

Regarding support, the diplomatic representative assured that the position of the Mexican government to refuse military support is respected. However, he reiterated that there are various forms of humanitarian aid that can still be sent.

“We understand this position, but there are other forms of help, we have received humanitarian aid in the form of seeds which have been sent over the past year. We are very grateful, these seeds are going to be used this year, they will help a lot, but we also ask for more humanitarian aid for the suffering Ukrainian people,” he commented.

It is already more than 365 days of invasion, during this period at least 802 attacks against health facilities, personnel and transport vehicles have been detected.

According Prosecutor General of UkraineAndriy Kostin, regional authorities registered more than 65,000 war crimes committed by Russian troops.

The panorama that stands before data and memories is bleak. However, the ambassador assured that from the first day of this invasion, all Ukrainians are sure that they will win.

“The history of the world has shown more than once that the winner is not the one who is the greatest, but the one who has the greatest motivation and the greatest desire to win,” he concluded. .
