Two Ukrainian brothers, aged 12 and 7, recent refugees from the war in their country, drowned when they accidentally fell into a pool of water, local media reported on Sunday.

The accident happened last Friday afternoon, when the two of them and their 5-year-old little sister went out to play near the town of Grand-Bourgtheroulde, in the Normandy region (north-west).

The eldest sister, 12, and a 7-year-old boy fell into a rainwater catchment basin, unable to return to land.

The little girl ran to alert the father, who pulled the bodies out of the water and called the fire department, who couldn’t do anything to revive the children.

This is a family recently arrived on French soil fleeing the war in their country. France currently hosts more than 100,000 Ukrainian refugees.

The public prosecutor’s office of the city of Evreux has opened an investigation to determine the causes of the two deaths.
