With 69 favorable votes, the plenary session of Congress approved this Friday the request for authorization to present and process legislative initiatives for constitutional reforms related to electoral advancement in this annual period of sessions.

By including the debate, it had to be put to the vote if it was accepted to reopen the debate on the constitutional reform bill tabled by the Constitution Commission.

Jorge Montoya, spokesperson for Renovación Popular, was one of the first to speak out against the reopening of the debate on the early elections. “This subject has caused us to waste 7 plenary sessions unnecessarily”, he said, proposing a point of order to reject the incorporation of the subject.

However, Congress Leader Jose Williams rejected the lawmaker’s request because, he said, the Council of Spokespersons has the power to put issues on the agenda. Montoya insists that his point of order be put to a vote.

Williams clarified that with this approval, the Constitution Commission is authorized to revisit the issue of electoral advancement during the current annual period of sessions (until July). It happened on the same day that the legislature expires.
