The Spaniard Ana Baneira Suarez 24 years old, imprisoned in Iran since the beginning of November, it was released by Iranian authorities and is already flying towards Spain Spanish Foreign Ministry sources reported this Sunday.

“She was released yesterday, but we didn’t want to announce it publicly until her plane took off from Iran. said Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares. The activist was returning to Spain, via Dubai, the sources said. His arrival in Madrid is scheduled for early afternoon.

Baneira, a member of a human rights NGO, was arrested last November for allegedly participating in protests following the death of Mahsa Amini the young woman who died after being arrested for wearing the misplaced Islamic veil.

At no time were the exact reasons or circumstances of his arrest revealed.

According to the ministry, the activist has already spoken with Minister Albares, to whom she assured that she was in good condition and expressed her joy at returning home and her gratitude for the steps taken by this department for her release.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) was the one that reported his arrest in November, without revealing the exact date or placeafter which Albares indicated that he had asked the Spanish embassy in Tehran to give priority to his case and that of another Spaniard, Santiago Sanchez fuckeralso arrested for allegedly visiting Amini’s grave.

Baneira is known in Galicia, his native region in Spain, for his involvement in various solidarity causes and several Galician entities had asked for his release.

Upon his release from prison, Sánchez Cogedor is still being held in Iran. It was stopped at the beginning of October as he traveled to Qatar to watch the World Cup right after visiting Amini’s grave.

During these months, Albares and other members of his department have maintained contact with their Iranian counterparts to demand the release of the two Spaniards, to take an interest in their situation and to guarantee them adequate treatment during their incarceration.

The sources consulted assured that now that Baneira has been released, efforts continue both from the consular services of the ministry and from the embassy in Tehran to secure her release and her family is kept informed at all times.
