President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) recognized its American counterpart (UNITED STATES), Joe Bidenby the decree which tightens the conditions for the purchase and sale of fire arms.
From his press conference, the chief executive replied to the American nation – without directly pointing to the Biden administration – for not prioritizing the sale of high power weapons that end up illegally in the hands of criminal groups in Mexico.
“It’s good that you carried out this action. (…) It’s good that it is ventilated. (…) It’s interesting that people know about it”, he commented since the lectern of the National Palace.
“Where do the weapons used by drug traffickers in Mexico come from? Well, from the United States. There they buy them without control. It’s a big deal out of control. (…) 80% of the weapons used here come from the USA. There is no control, they can buy a machine gun in a supermarket”.
The statement stemmed from López Obrador’s new claim on former President Felipe Calderón’s strategy: to “subordinate” the management of security in Mexico to the United States (both in arms trafficking and drug trafficking ) on the basis of “failed strategies” of the agencies.
“¿How are we going to let the DEA handle security in Mexico?? If they showed they couldn’t. Or have there been good results in the United States in the fight against drugs? No. And we are moving forward, ”he cut short.
It was on March 15 that the American president signed the resolution calling for increase the number of procedures in order to corroborate the criminal record of each buyer, as well as those who engage in their trade.
“We will no longer allow the interests of arms manufacturers to prevail over the safety of our children and the nation,” Biden said in a press release, the message of which was also acknowledged by Marcelo Ebrard.

The recognition of the Mexican Foreign Minister is due to the speech with which he led the civil complaint that in August 2021, Mexico sued US arms manufacturers in a court in Massachusetts.
The argument indicated that these companies contributed to the reinforcement of the drug trade. This, he pointed out, as they are the producers of models “with different and more valuable characteristics” that these criminal groups use after being illegally trafficked between the two nations.
