“This dangerous episode is part of a aggressive actions pattern, risky and dangerous by Russian pilots in international airspace,” Austin said. “Russia has a responsibility to operate its military aircraft safely and professionally.”
The incident, the first known physical contact between the Russian and US military since the start of the war in Ukraine, has heightened tensions between the superpowers, although there were signs on Wednesday that the two nations were trying to contain the spin off.
