BARCELONA (AP) — Spain’s La Liga has lowered Barcelona’s salary cap following their last Champions League exit.

Updating the caps each top division team must spend on their squad, La Liga said on Monday that Barca’s limit was set at 648 million euros ($692 million), down from the previous amount €656 million ($700 million).

Barcelona’s ceiling has remained relatively high thanks to financial maneuvers to restructure its debts, although La Liga have indicated that the club will have to cut some €200m ahead of next season, which could be achieved by cutting costs at the within the team or looking for new investments. .

La Liga also reduced the limits of Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla after they were excluded from the Champions League in the group stage. That of Atlético was at 315 million euros and that of Seville at 191 million euros.

Five-time Champions League winners Barcelona have been shipwrecked in the group stage for the second straight season.

Real Madrid remain the club with the highest spending cap in the league at €683m, unchanged from last season.

The lower limit corresponds to 42 million euros from Elche.

Each Spanish club has a different ceiling depending on factors such as income, costs and debts. It is proportional to approximately 70% of the club’s income.
