MADRID (AP) — The Spanish league reported an alleged match-fixing attempt to police on Thursday after a former Girona player admitted to receiving an offer of money to lose.

The League’s complaint arose as Aday Benítez revealed in a sports streaming program that he had received an offer of 50,000 euros ($53,000) if Girona lost a duel at the end of the 2016 season- 17.

Benítez said he didn’t accept the offer as it would have been “absurd” to do so, as Girona were fighting for promotion to the first division. He did not provide further details on who made the offer.

In a statement, the League stressed that “the predetermination of the results is a crime (in Spain), as well as proof of the sole intention to fix the proposal”.

Last month, Spanish police arrested six people for their alleged involvement in a plot to fix a Copa del Rey match in 2021. The game under investigation is Levante’s 8-0 win over Huracán Melilla, a club from the lower divisions.

Authorities detected numerous bets on the match in Melilla both online and in betting houses.
