The Ministry of Education has assured that more than five million students have benefited from the School Feeding Program (PAE)). These data are due to the start of classes in official educational institutions, since 82 of the 97 Territorial Entities of Approved Education (ETC) reported the start of the operation of the PAE.

According to the EAP operations report, produced by the Food for Learning Unit (UAPA), in total, the beneficiaries were 5′104.136 boys, girls, adolescents and young people in Colombian territory. In this regard, the ministry stressed the importance of the start of the school year “going hand in hand with the school canteen program”.

Luis Fernando Correa Serna director of the UApA, underlined that on February 15, “18 new ETCs (…) have started the operation of the PAE”. These entities are located in Armenia, Cartagena, Cesar, Chia, Cordoba, Facatativa, Guaviare, La Guajira, Maicao, Meta, Orange, Snow, Pasture, Popayán, Riohacha, Tobacco, Uribia and Villavicencio.

“That means an additional 1,166,000 students have started receiving school meals,” he added.

The official stressed that the number of children, adolescents and young people who have access to these benefits will increase. For example, the PAE teams of Caquetá, Quindío, Santa Marta, Sincelejo and Vaupés have declared that over the next two weeks 171,945 students They will also have access to the initiative.

On the other hand, the UApA is monitoring the programs which will start at the end of February and the beginning of March in nine cities for more than 260,000 students. The territories are: Buenaventura, Ciénaga, Guainía, Ipiales, Lorica, Pitalito, Sucre, Valledupar and Yopal (Casanare).

“We met the ETC Casanaré and Yopal. Together with the Casanare PAE team, we are analyzing alternatives to provide the service to approximately 1,800 Indigenous students“, specified the director of the unit. According to the official, three indigenous associations that manage the program have denounced that they have not been able to acquire the necessary insurance policies.

As it concerns ETC from Yopal, there was pre-planning of the program, but “he had several calls declared void”. Correa Serna indicated that the entity expects the delivery of the PAE to take place in the first days of March, after progress in “an abbreviated selection”.

In the case of Bolivar, The school calendar for the start of the school year is February 20, so they are taking measures to deliver the EAP to 132,000 students by the beginning of March. “We hope that they will launch the school canteen program in parallel”, underlined the director of the UApA.

It is important to remember that the program has experienced several irregularities across the country, even since before the president Gustavo Petro will take possession Indeed, the delays in the implementation of the PAEs of the 15 remaining FTEs have led the General Prosecutor’s Office to draw attention to the lack of food for these students.

The official spoke about the objectives of the new administration with the implementation of the PAE in the year. “Under the leadership of President Gustavo Petro and the Minister of Education, Alexandre Gaviriathere are important challenges for 2023 ″, explained Correa and assured that among these bets on a program carried out in rural areas.

Among the proposed objectives is the implementation of the PAE in the most remote areas of the country through Community Action Councils (JACs) or parent-teacher associations. The initiative is based on the “very good results according to the preliminary evaluations”, explained the director of the unit.
