Toni Collet (Sixth Sense) returns to the cinema with a comedy to savor that takes the viewer to enjoy beautiful Italy. The movie is called The Mafia Heiress (mafia mom its title in English) in which the actress gives life to Kristin Balbano Jordan, a woman who is going through a marital crisis (she discovers her husband’s infidelity), a son who is entering university and a job as a pharmaceutical marketing manager who no longer encourages him.
In the middle of this scenario, Kirstin gets a call from a woman she doesn’t know named Bianca (Monica Bellucci), who informs him that his Italian grandfather has passed away and that they are waiting for him to go to the funeral. Despite the fact that she has never had a relationship with this man, she decides to embark and leave California where happiness eludes her to reach Rome where she hopes to be able to rediscover herself. Bianca is actually the family’s trusted “consigliere” (adviser) who will accompany Kirstin’s conversion process.
But upon arriving in the capital of Italy, she finds a strange scene and discovers that her grandfather was a mafia boss and the inheritance she receives is that she must take charge of these shady business. Reluctant at first, the “accommodating” former housewife realizes that being a mafia boss has its perks: a group that respects what she has to offer, a fantastic wardrobe, angel protection Bianca’s goalkeeper and a break from the endless Zoom calls.
This is how he describes the synopsis of this funny film based on the original story by Amanda Sthers and directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, at thirteen) which uses many mafia movie codes like The Godfather oh good guys but he places the highest position within a mafia organization on the shoulders of a woman. In the film, there is a big reference to the character of Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando) when he plays with his grandson (Michael’s son) with orange peels in his mouth. “So in our film we have oranges spilling down the street in a nice homage to the mafia. It was very visual to have these monochromatic stone streets and then having the oranges rolling,” said said the director of The Mafia Heiress.
“I was blown away by the originality of the script,” Collette said in a press release. “It made me laugh, it was extremely grounded and had a subtle feminist edge that was in no way dogmatic – perfectly balanced but tonally unusual and exciting. I was, and am, flattered and grateful that Amanda brought it to me that way,” concluded the actress who was the one who offered Hardwicke to take over directing the film.
The tone of this story is reminiscent of that blockbuster movie I analyse with Robert de Niro and Billy Cristal where a stressed mafia boss decides to start therapy and all in a comical tone. a review of mafia movies that will make you laugh more than once.
The Mafia Heiress is a fun, action-packed, thought-provoking comedy about how an ordinary woman defies everyone’s expectations, including her own. As the synopsis summarizes, “If she has to take down mob bosses and assassins along the way, maybe that’s what she needs to earn some respect.”
The film hits theaters on April 27 and the cast is completed by Alfonso Perugini, Giulio Corso and Livia De Paolis among others.
