The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has been “very concerned” about the omicron and delta variants of the coronavirus, which are causing “a tsunami” of infections.

These two variants have increased the cases of covid-19 to record numbers, causing new spikes in hospitalizations and deaths. The WHO urges governments to vaccinate 70% of their respective populations by mid-2022, a year in which according to Ghebreyesus, the acute stage of the pandemic could end.
