The reprehensible fact shocked the art world

Artistic sensitivity has reached its extreme. Last weekend, the world was surprised by the reprehensible reaction of the ballet director of the Hannover State Opera, Marco Goecke who attacked the cultural critic of the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (HE DOES) Wiebke Huster with dog excrement, during a ballet break.

The journalist conducted an interview with the public television and radio company NDR (North German Broadcasting) and there he commented that he felt “like an animal that was attacked by a lion”. In his review, published the very evening of the premiere in the Hannover State Operahad expressed that the piece of Marco Goecke he hadn’t liked it.

At the first intermission of that evening, he passed Goecke and thought: “He must be angry, he has the right to want to talk to me.” He questioned her, “We should have banned you because you always write very bad and personal things about me.” Then, the attacker took out a bag full of excrement and smeared the contents on her face, which left her shocked, panicked and fearful for her physical integrity. “It was like an animal that was attacked by a lion,” she said.

This unfortunate fact caused critics to analyze all the articles he had written on Goecke in its twenty years of existence and found only nine reviews, two of which were very positive. It cannot be said that he continued with negative reports. Also, he underlined the importance of journalists during the dissemination of art and what happened seems unfortunate and recalled the case of the artistic director Karin Beier who in a podcast in 2019 treated the reviews as crap.

In any case, the journalist clarified that despite what happened, her style of writing will not change: “It will not diminish my love for my profession. It will not tarnish my feeling towards journalism either. Furthermore, he said that after what happened he went to the police and reported the crime. Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung she also filed a criminal complaint against him. It should be noted that the director is the subject of a police investigation, has been suspended and has been denied access to the facilities of the Hanover Opera.
