Gustavo Manrique, the Ecuadorian Minister of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition, reiterated the country’s refusal to receive the hippos that Colombia planned to send to different countries due to the increase in the species, which is considered dangerous for the territory and its inhabitants.
In an interview with EFE, the minister stated that the country prohibits the entry of exotic species by law and would only allow it under certain circumstances, such as for research, science, genetic material extraction, or cure purposes. However, he said that the country has no interest in receiving the hippos as it would generate liabilities for custody, infrastructure, and food, and the country already has significant needs to which it must respond. Therefore, he assured that “they will not enter Ecuador.”
A statement released by the Ecuadorian entity confirmed that a risk study on the species had been conducted, and its introduction into the region could have possible negative effects. After the reform of the Organic Code of the Environment, the import of exotic wild animals into Ecuadorian territory is not possible.
Recently, Colombia had announced the possibility of sending the hippos, previously owned by Pablo Escobar, to other parts of the world, including Mexico, Ecuador, and India. However, according to the authorities, the entry of hippos into the country is not allowed, as it has been considered an invasive species.
The hippos were introduced to Colombia in 1984, and since then, the species has rapidly grown, with more than 130 specimens declared as alien and invasive species by environmental authorities. If they continue to reproduce in the country, they are expected to reach up to 1,500 by 2039.
It is important to emphasize that any action aimed at marketing, possession, breeding, mobilization, or promotion of the animals is illegal. The authorities are currently seeking a solution to the situation of the species in the country.
