FEMSA finds its origins at the end of the 19th century. In 1890, five northern Mexican businessmen founded what is now known as the Cuahtémoc Brewery, then called the Cuauhtémoc Ice and Beer Factory.

With some name changes and closures, the company managed to consolidate and in 1921 one of its departments became another company, dedicated to the production of bottle caps.

Expansion continued in other areas, which included the establishment of schools such as ITESM (Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey) and in 1978 it opened the first Oxxo store.

Its headquarters are in the city of Monterrey, but it is present in 11 countries in the Americas as well as in the Philippines.

Barely a year after the opening of this first store in the capital of Nuevo León, there were already branches in other northern Mexican states such as Baja California, Sonora and Chihuahua, where these establishments were established thanks to to their good reputation.

In 1998, the 1,000th branch was opened and in 2011, with a presence throughout Mexico, the 9,000th store was inaugurated in Oaxaca.
