Last week, Proteo went from being a canine couple in the Mexican army to a beacon of hope.

And it is that the German Shepherd dog died during search and rescue work due to the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6. The news shocked people in both countries; since then, recognitions and tributes to the four-legged hero have not ceased.

The most recent is a corrido norteño in his honor, which was written by Jesús Soto Baltazar, a 44-year-old man who lives in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, who is not a music composer, but in the maintenance area of the State University Correcaminos Football Club.

The song can already be heard through a video on YouTube: “The Mexican government sent help to this country / Army and its peers, their task was going to be done / In search and rescue, because fate is like this / Proteus was a pairing, was the best trained; With his trainer he had saved many / But the time has come… Diosito took him away,” says part of the lyrics.

“The idea came to me because of the sadness I felt when I heard the news of his death. Tears came to my eyes and I started writing the lyrics on my mobile phone. I believe the same thing happened to thousands or millions of Mexicans,” he said in an interview for El Universal.

However, he admitted that he alone is the author, since he decided to have it sung by a professional.

On the other hand, the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC-CDMX) announced this Saturday that the women deprived of liberty of the Women’s Center for Social Reintegration Santa Martha Acatitla have made crochet figurines with the image of Proteo.

According to the agency, the stuffed animals cost 390 pesos and are on sale at the institutional store Hazme Valer, Penitentiary Products, located in Calzada San Antonio Abad No. 130, ground floor, Tránsito neighborhood, Cuauhtémoc town hall.

It should be mentioned that crocheting is one of the activities taught in prison as part of vocational training and its aim is to enable women to develop skills to become independent after obtaining their freedom.

In addition, on February 18, the Municipal Institute of Youth (IMJ) inaugurated a fresco of the canid of the humanitarian aid brigade of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).

It was made by the artist Croms Akompa, on the fence of a house located on Mario Colín Avenue, in the municipality of Tlalnepantla, in the State of Mexico. “Thank you, Proteus,” reads the mural.

In this regard, countless neighbors and passers-by took advantage of the works to take a selfie and share it on their networks.

While in Turkey on February 16, fans of Super League’s Trabzonspor raised a large ‘tifo’ honoring the heroes who labored among the rubble, during the match against FC Basel, of Switzerland, corresponding to matchday 6 of the UEFA Conference League.

In said cover, a firefighter appears in whose helmet are the flags of the countries that have joined the humanitarian aid, an environment in ruins, the red and white flag of the moon and the star, as well as Proteo, as a sign of gratitude to Mexico and the members of its brigade.

In addition to typhus made by hand and with various fabrics, a message of support for the country also appeared: “Together we will heal our wounds”.
