Sea lions dead in Puerto Etén. (Senasa)

Peru has accumulated the largest amount of wild animals infected with the H5N1 virus, which is a subtype of bird flu. On March 4, in the neighborhood of Puerto Eten, seven dead sea lions as a possible consequence of H5N1 influenza virus.

Recall that the Andean country was the first to report mammals infected with Avian Flu, including thousands of sea lions and a dolphin. The fact worries the whole world, since for 25 years the virus was infected between wild birds and poultry.

The mayor of the borough of port foodEnrique Baca Castañeda is the one who reported the dead sea lions in recent weeks.

The dead species were found in dream beach, which is the main Puerto Eten, located in the province of Chiclayo, in Lambayeque. The mayor contacted the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (Senasa) for them to collect the bodies and also, the exact reason for the death of the seven mammals is known.

Regarding the death of birds in the place due to avian flu, Baca indicated that there are no further records of the said species since December 2022. He also clarified that the few dead birds appearing have a cause of death other than that of the virus.

He stressed that he will continue awareness campaigns so that people avoid approaching birds and mammals that appear sick or dead on the banks. Everyone must alert the municipality so that it can contact the corresponding authorities and carry out the respective follow-up.

In animals, this disease may present as follows:

– Visible decline in the behavior of the species.

– Difficulty breathing.

– Partial paralysis of the body or extremities.

– Runny nose and cough.

Faced with the outbreak of H5N1 influenza infections in wild animals in coastal areas, it is better to comply with certain recommendations.

– Do not approach animals stranded on the coast.

– Avoid touching sick or dead poultry.

– Report the cases to the corresponding authorities who are Serfor, Senasa and Sernanp.
