BERLIN (AP) — Schalke fought back twice to bounce back and eliminate Borussia Dortmund in their title hopes with a 2-2 draw in the 100th Bundesliga Ruhr derby on Saturday.

Schalke striker Marius Bülter scored to equalize and assist in the second to end Dortmund’s eight-game winning streak in the league and leave Bayern Munich two points clear at the top of the table.

“The second half was crazy, as Schalke wanted. We gave the victory at the end,” acknowledged Dortmund coach Edin Terzić.

A few hours earlier, Bayern beat Augsburg 5-3 in the Bavarian derby.

Schalke and Dortmund are the only teams not to lose in the second half of the season, but that will be no consolation for Dortmund, who saw their 2023 winning streak ended on Tuesday when they were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea .

Dortmund created more chances on goal, but Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann fared better than Donyell Malen.

Finally Nico Schlotterbeck opened the scoring after 38 minutes with a shot from outside the box.

“We were completely under control in the first half. We had to decide that in the second,” admitted Schlotterbeck.

Halftime fell at the right time for Schalke, who equalized Bülter in the 50th minute from a center by Michael Frey.

Raphaël Guerreiro regained the Dortmund lead after an hour. But Schalke rallied again when Bülter set up Kenan Karaman with a header in the 79th minute.

MARK THE DEFENSE

Bayern Munich defenders gave them a 5-3 win over Augsburg in the day’s other derby.

João Cancelo opened the scoring and Benjamin Pavard scored twice before Alphonso Davies followed the trend of the defenders scoring with Bayern’s fifth goal in the 74th minute. Leroy Sané also scored for the 10-time Bundesliga champions.

Leipzig took third place with a 3-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Eintracht Frankfurt and Stuttgart, as well as Hertha Berlin and Mainz drew 1-1.

Hertha played its first game since it was confirmed that 777 Partners of Miami had acquired the majority of the club’s shares.

In Munich, Augsburg’s Mergim Berisha set the hosts on fire with a second-minute goal after Pavard failed to clear the ball.

Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann found himself shouting profanities down the flank but Cancelo equalized after 15 minutes, Pavard then made up for his error by scoring four minutes later and adding another with a volley at the 35. Sané made it 4-1 before halftime. time.

Berisha brought his team closer with a penalty early in the complementary game, but Bayern’s triumph was never in doubt. Irvin Cardona scored a consolation goal for Augsburg in added time.
